SIDERITE   Keyes #1 Mine, Orange, NH
5 mm field of view. Scallop shell-shaped, orange, siderite crystals.

Locality:          Keyes #1 Mine, Orange, NH
Specimen Size: 5 mm field of view. Scallop shell-shaped, orange, siderite crystals.
Field Collected: Tom Mortimer
Catalog No.: u170
Notes: This Keyes Mine siderite was confirmed by EDS analysis. The plot shows a strong Fe response with minor Mn and Mg. Light elements O and C are outside the instrument's range.
An quantitative analysis of a similar Peter Cristofono specimen (NH54, BC set 28, May, 2021) indicated a magnesium rich siderite with about 28% magnesium and 8% manganese replacing iron in the siderite composition. The varietal name "sideroplesite" has been used for Mg rich siderite. Reference Dana's System of Mineralogy, vol. II, 7th edition, pg. 169.
